Montessori Education System

The Montessori Training that has been in use for over a century was developed by Maria Montessori, an Italian teaching philosophy specialist. Maria Montessori, born in 1870 in Ancora, Italy, became a medical doctor in 1896. Motessori, who is known to be the first female individual to obtain this title in Italy, then shifted to the field of pediatrics and devoted herself to the education of children. Dr. Montessori, who performed work on the children with mental disabilities, asserted that the treatment of children lays within the education, not within the realm of medicine.

In the educational system developed by Maria Montessori aims to provide an education to children, which is in line with their areas of interest. Today, individuals, who came up with the most creative ideas and rose to certain ranks and offices, have been nurtured with the Montessori education system. With this educational system, where there are no restrictions and limitations, a liberal education is offered to the children. Today, in order to provide Montessori education, educators are trained by the UK based International Montessori Association. This educational system covers the kindergarten, primary school and in some countries up to high schools.

Maria Montessori, as the result of his observations, found out that in case the natural development of the children is carried on by creating a suitable environment for the children, they tend to learn reading and writing and subjects like math automatically just like they learn how to walk and talk automatically. In this approach, an environment has three main elements. A group, formed the children, whose ages are different from one another, educational materials that are prepared in a liberal manner in line of the needs of the children and an educator, who has the qualifications to understand and meet the indicated needs. If an environment, where such elements are present, children can learn between the ages 4-6.

How is the Montessori Education applied?

In Montessori Education, what the children like and dislike are determined at first. The children, whose areas of interest are identified in this regard, are steered to making independent choices. During the education, the student is placed at the very center. Students, who began the day with balancing walks, then continue to the course with the most appropriate activities for them. In the Montessori Education, in which the children are directed to view themselves as an individual, the family, student and the teacher are in close cooperation. The education is provided according to the learning speed of the student and the information is thought by groping, not by mind.  It is enabled that the material conceptions are understood via the abstract elements. The mental concepts are solidified within the mind with the help of sensing method. The child, who performs the error check on his own, may transform learning as an activity, independent from the adults with this way. The tools and equipment, used in this education system, are also unique to the system as well.  They are coordination tools, cubes and triangles in prismatic sizes, wooden dominoes, weight tubes and similar devices. The materials change and vary depending on each age level.

The Main characteristics of the Montessori Approach

The Montessori Educational System is a comprehensive educational system that can be implemented at home or in the school. Therefore, both the family and the teachers are required to know the basics of the Montessori System. At schools, which provide Montessori System, the kids may roam freely within the classroom; they can use all the areas within the school ground as they wish. They can undertake any activities they want. The reality and naturalism bear utmost importance in such classes. So the materials are used in their literal sense. In the Montessori class, where there is only one material from each type, the child needs to wait for the finish of the use of the material. In this system; the development of the aspects of the child like sense of cleanliness, choosing the color harmony, learning to be patient, being an individual are placed great importance. In this system, where the desire to learn and the joy of searching are offered together, the children are natural leaders and they get very happy to take on new assignments. Skills in daily life, mathematical activities, activities to develop language skills, activities for faculty training, universal learning activates are the methods, employed in this system.

The child should be able to make his own bed in the morning when waking up and should be able to pull the cover by him / her when sleeping. The clothes should be hanged at a height that the child can reach and should be placed in drawers, where the child may access to. The books should be placed at eye level and in a way that the child can reach to them easily. Each group of toy should be separated in different box or sections. Nutritional regime of the child in Montessori Educational System

For the eating order of the children, the Montessori educational system, is comprised of factors such as assigning a shelf for them in the fridge, creating a space for them to work on, keeping the tools they use t a place, where they can reach to and creating an area, where they can feed their own when they get hungry. The goal of the education is the self sufficiency of the children. Therefore, the child should be supported in subjects like cleaning up the table and setting it up. The parents are role models for the children in terms of nutrition. So the parent should also consume what the children do. Children get the ability to use cutlery starting from age 1. Even if it takes a long time, the child should be allowed to eat his own meal. A routine should be determined regarding the eating and the child should be assisted in adopting a nutrition order.
